April 6 Edify Devotional

Today’s Devotional Theme
Deep Roots Make Strong Trees

Daily Scripture
Jeremiah 17:7-9
Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, And whose hope is the Lord. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, Which spreads out its roots by the river, And will not fear when heat comes; But its leaf will be green, And will not be anxious in the year of drought, Nor will cease from yielding fruit. "The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?”

Encouragement
Verse 5 and 6 of Jeremiah 17, provide a stark contrast to the blessed life of the man who puts his trust in the Lord. Thus says the Lord: "Cursed is the man who trusts in man And makes flesh his strength, Whose heart departs from the Lord. 6 For he shall be like a shrub in the desert, And shall not see when good comes, But shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, In a salt land which is not inhabited. Notice the man who puts his trust in man is likened to a shrub in the desert. Could this be relating to the well-known tumbleweed?

Apply God’s Word
Do you know what makes a tumbleweed so susceptible to the wind? Tumbleweeds only put down one root, and that root is very shallow. So tumbleweeds are easily uprooted when the wind blows. Soon the tumbleweed is blowing wherever the wind pushes it, without any sense of direction or stability. Contrast a tumbleweed with a tree, like a sequoia, that puts down lots of roots and these roots go deep. Even in the midst of strong winds, sequoias stand firm, because their root structure is strong and deep.

Come into His Presence
Father, help me to dig deep in Your Word. I do not want to be blown around like the tumbleweed. I want beep roots. If I face tough things today, help me to recall Your Words, and speak them, not mine. In Jesus' Name I pray. Amen.
