August 11 Edify Devotional

Today’s Devotional Theme
Acts of God

Daily Scripture
Matthew 27:50-52
And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit. And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split. The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised.”'And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams. And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy.’”
Encouragement
Earthquakes. Floods. Tsunamis. Tornados. Wildfires. Rocks from outer space clobbering the earth. These and other natural phenomena are all formally known as “acts of God” by insurance companies. If you plow through the text of your car or home policy, you’ll almost certainly see certain “acts of God” excluded from coverage unless you have riders to include them. Wikipedia defines an act of God as “a legal term used within the English-speaking world for events outside human control, such as sudden natural disasters, for which no one can be held responsible.” The implication is that God causes them. Not everyone will agree, but I believe God does not directly bring into motion “acts of God,” although He set the stage for them to happen when He created the earth and its inhabitants.
Take Action!
From the first verse of the Bible, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth,” to the second to the last, “…Come, Lord Jesus!” are recorded thousands of true acts of God, events for which He is directly responsible. In fact, one can make a strong case for calling the Bible a record of the acts of God. Today’s verses demonstrate a sequence of some of the most dramatic and portentous acts in the entire word. Luke adds in Luke 23:44-45 that thick darkness covered the earth from noon to 3 pm. While a skeptic might claim that these events were nothing more than coincidental natural phenomena, we who believe know that they represent the strong hand of God, demonstrating that He had His Son’s death firmly under control. The torn temple veil, the darkness, and the powerful earthquake all served notice that Jesus’ death on that cross wasn’t the end of the story of the Son’s ministry. And today, as I sit here tapping out this devotion, God is just as active in our midst as He ever was. Whenever God answers the prayer of an intercessor, God is acting directly on our behalf, working a miracle in our life.

Come into His Presence
Lord God, I thank You for the resurrection of Your Son. I thank You for ripping away the veil, so that we all might have free and ready access to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
