Daily Scripture
Genesis 24:1-22

Encouragement
This account in Genesis 24 is one of my favorite accounts in scripture. It begins with someone serving and concludes with that servant being served. I do want to highlight Rebekah's part in this moment, as it describes how we should serve so beautifully! Let's take a closer look at this illustration of serving. Eliezer, Abraham's servant, had a minimum of 11 camels with him. Rebekah offered to not just give them a drink, but to keep bringing water until “They have had enough to drink”. I want to expound on what that really entailed. The “vessel” she carried would have contained from 3-7 gallons of water. For simplicity's sake, let's say it contained 5 gallons of water. Each camel can contain up to 30 gallons of water. Camels often will drink up to 20 gallons of water per setting. So, let's say they each drank 15 gallons of water. That means Rebekah would have retrieved a minimum of 165 gallons of water. This would have taken a minimum of 33 trips to the water source and back. We don't know how far Rebekah had to go o fill her vessels. Let's say it took her 5 minutes each trip. That means it would have taken her nearly 3 hours to complete that task. No wonder it states in verse 22 that “then at last, when the camels had finished drinking...” Her service took her a while to accomplish.

Apply God’s Word
So, Pastor Brian, since I have no camels to water, how can I apply this lesson? Well, you begin by adopting the same attitude Rebekah displayed. I call it the “and then some” attitude. In other words, when asked to serve, don't do the least amount possible to call it service. Go above and beyond what others expect. Do what they asked, “and them some”!

Come into His Presence
Father, help me to go beyond least expectations when I serve. Help me to be an and then some Christian. In Jesus' name, amen.
