May 12 Edify Devotional

Today’s Devotional Theme
So, You Wanna Be Great?

Daily Scripture
Matthew 18:1-4
At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who then is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” Then Jesus called a little child to him, set him in the midst of them, and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”

Encouragement
In a culture full of people seeking their fortunes and fifteen minutes of fame, the message of humility and serving seems to get lost in all of the noise. To serve others takes humility on the part of the one serving. Jesus shuts down the disciples petty arguing of which of them had the highest ranking among them. In typical fashion, Jesus changes their thinking paradigm with an illustration and a statement. This seems to have been an ongoing debate with the twelve. Once again, in Matthew 23:1-12, Jesus teaches the disciples how to be great. He states in verse 11, “the greatest among you must be a servant”. This way of thinking and living flies in the face of a self-important, serve me world. Serving, in God's eyes, makes you great!

Apply God’s Word
The most practical way of applying this to our lives is found in verse 12 of Matthew 23. Jesus states: “But those who exact themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” Jesus tells us that, when WE choose to exalt or humble ourselves, the results are predetermined. So, let's choose the road less traveled today. Let's each of us choose this day to humble ourselves and serve others. People of greatness, serve!

Come into His Presence
Father, help me to change the way I think about being great. Help me to choose the way of humility and serving. I want to be great. But Lord, I want to be great by doing it Your way! In Jesus' name, amen.
